I finally got the photos from the 2017 Alaska Open titled and in categories ... hope you enjoy them. The link is at the end of this post.

This was the first time the Juneau Golf Club held its Alaska Open Tournament at the Tubac Golf Resort and Spa in Tubac, Arizona, near Tucson. The sunshine didn't disappoint us as it was out in full force ... apparently about 15 degrees warmer than normal which was kind of tough on some Alaskans coming down from Juneau, Alaska! The chairman of the tournament will be speaking with the resort to see if some changes can be made to help with the extreme heat problem. On two days we had to start at noon which put us into the high heat of the day.

I added photos of the beautiful venue ... authentic Southwest architecture and décor. All rooms are in small buildings and there are gathering areas between the buildings for socializing. There are three 9-hole golf courses so we played different combinations throughout the tournament. We had breakfast on two mornings, a group dinner and the awards banquet in a very nice room that looked out on the golf course. There is a cantina by the club house for breakfast or lunch. A very nice restaurant onsite serves all meals, and is connected to a full-service bar. Patio seating for the bar and restaurant is also available and looks out on the golf course.

The first day was a Best Ball Scramble, and the winners were:

1st Place: David George, Dave Hunt, Carl Christensen, Barb Whiting
2nd Place: Tony Chadwick, Tim Whiting, Sandy Sturrock, Kristi Peel
3rd Place: Dot Walker, Marty Michiels, Seth Howard, Jack Bodine

Days 2-4 were tournament play with the following winners:

Men's Low Gross: Gary Murdoch
Men's Low Net: Tony Chadwick (sponsored by Dick & Candy Behrends of Behrends Mechanical)
Men's A Flight: 1st place, Steve Burnett - 2nd place, Rob Worden - 3rd place, David George
Men's B Flight: 1st place, John Mangusso - 2nd place, Steve Houlihan - 3rd place, Kim Custer
Men's C Flight: 1st place, Mitch Falk - 2nd place, Dave Asselstine - 3rd place, Rob Bentz

Senior's Low Gross: Tim Mitchell
Senior's A Flight: 1st place, George Mangini - 2nd place, Steve Schlaffman - 3rd place, Jim Topolski
Senior's B Flight: 1st place, Tim Whiting - 2nd place, Larry Schutt - 3rd place, Lou Edwards

Women's Low Gross: Dot Walker
Women's Low Net: Jan Topolski (sponsored by Doug & Nancy Courtney of Alaska Commercial Contractors)
Women's A Flight: 1st place, Brenda Asselstine - 2nd place, Chris Kramer - 3rd place, Karen Muench
Women's B Flight: 1st place, Kristi Peel - 2nd place, Kris Burnett - 3rd place, Laura Beason

Other skill winnings can be found on our juneaugolf.com website.

A huge thank you to Alison Elgee who (according to Co-Chair Doug Rickey) did most of the work, and to Leslie and Jeff Hansen who were the local support and made the great banquet centerpieces, and Laura Beason who once again provided invaluable tech support and prior tournament knowledge support. Also thank you to Candy Behrends who provided photos from the first day's scramble and to Jim Jacobsen and Shana Ferguson for photographing the 3 days of tournament play and the banquet. In spite of nearly chopping off her thumb, Shana was there in her usual good spirits! The link to the photos of this 2017 Alaska Open is:

So there we were, all happy and everything that we were in the warm sunshine! It was, after all, beautiful Redmond, Oregon, not rainy Juneau Alaska. However, it didn't last long ... raingear, umbrellas for the golf clubs, layers upon layers of clothes, warm hats and gloves ... those were the choices for Juneau's golfers in the 2015 Fall Memorial Tournament at Eagle Crest Golf Resort. However, it didn't dampen the spirits of these true Alaska golfers ... the games went on as scheduled with much merriment in between games! Here's a recap of the winners:

And LAST BUT NOT LEAST BY ANY MEANS ... BOB PEEL SUNK A PUTT AND WON $10,000 (yes, you read that right ... ten thousand dollars). Congratulations, Bob!!

Once again, a big huge thank you to Steve and Kris Burnett, chairs of this tournament. They did an outstanding job and have agreed to chair the next fall tournament in 2016! Another big huge thank you goes to Candy Behrends who faithfully appeared each day, even in the rain, to capture the good and sometimes the bad (and funny) poses that our golfers did for her. I have added this wonderful collection of photos to the Flickr site, and you can view them here:

We had a reception with food prepared by the resort while golfers gathered to sign in, confirming their registration. We had two dinners during the event. While golfers got ready to play, Candy Behrends was busy getting candid photos of the events, and took photos of each group on the course. She's very creative, so I hope you enjoy her photos that I have uploaded to Flickr. If you hover over the photos, it will tell who is in the photo, and there is a section of photos that I just couldn't resist commenting on ... check them out and you'll get an idea of the fun we all had!
With three very different golf courses to play, tournament registrants were challenged in a Best Ball Scramble on Day 1 followed by 3 days of tournament play.

Laura Beason, Alison Elgee and Candy Behrends were in charge and provided fun and games throughout the tournament. During the registration reception featuring lots of food and libations, we also had a putting contest, and on the final day, raffle tickets were drawn for putts and chips and prizes were available in case of a hole-in-one. Prizes were also awarded for "closest to the pin" and "straightest drive" on designated holes each day.

Congratulations to the winners!
We had 84 golfers who bundled up for the morning frost delays and removed layers as the day warmed up, usually to the mid 80's. A nice break from Juneau's record cold and wet summer!

The beautiful setting was once again at the Eagle Crest Golf Resort in Redmond, Oregon. Golfers attended a welcome reception as they confirmed their attendance at the registration table the evening before the golfing started.

The first day's play was on the Resort Course, a "best ball" scramble with four-somes selected by handicaps so they were all more-or-less equal teams. Being a player usually at the end of the scoring list, I always enjoy this day, being able to play with players that I wouldn't normally get to play with since they are from across the flights. And it's always a thrill to get to watch the "A" player show off. :-)

The next three days were tournament play days and scores were accumulated and handicaps applied. The first day was on the Challenge Course, next day was on the Ridge Course, and the final day was on the Resort Course. From these three days of play, the winners were:

MEN'S LOW GROSS: David George

WOMEN'S B FLIGHT: 1st Net, Kris Burnett; 2nd Net, Laura Beason; 3rd Net, Pam Christensen

In addition to the net scores, certain holes were set up to measure "closest to the pin" and "straightest drive." Awards were given to the winners of each tournament day and also to the top three "scramble" teams. These winners were:

SCRAMBLE TEAMS:
1st Place: Sid Jarnell, George Mangini, Tim Dimond
Sorry there aren't more from the golf course, but we were too busy golfing!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3736481368041588581.post-38368106266781445352011-07-31T21:01:00.003-08:002011-08-14T16:39:28.761-08:002011 Alaska Open Golf TournamentThe 2011 Alaska Open tournament of the Juneau Golf Club was held March 15-18, 2011 at the Francisco Grande Golf Resort in Casa Grande, Arizona. It was organized by co-chairs Tim and Barb Whiting.

110 golfers participated in 4 men's flights, 2 senior men's flights, and 2 women's flights. After the Monday registration, a welcome reception was held that was so generously sponsored by Elaine Canary of Coldwell Banker Excell Realty of Casa Grande. Elaine is a Juneauite who lives in Casa Grande part time, and can help you find a home there!

The first day was a co-ed best-ball scramble format with teams determined by handicap, a great way to get to play with players of different levels of experience and talent. The next three days were tournament play, with Closest-to-the-Pin (KP) and Straightest Drive for the flights. The putting contest qualifications were held each afternoon, with the finalists playing off for the top ten spots on Friday. Ron Shaw won the drawing for a chance to sink a 60 foot putt for $5,000 but alas, it wasn't to be. However, the good news is Jim Williams did get a hole-in-one on hole 13, but the bad news is he didn't buy hole-in-one insurance offered at registration, so it really cost him!

Dinners were provided 3 evenings, with the last one being the Awards Banquet. Francisco Grande Golf Resort did a great job providing these meals. Door prizes were awarded each evening, and the day's KP and straightest drives were also awarded. Once again we had "scores of the day" drawings which are very fun.

You can find scores for all players on the juneaugolf.com website along with a list of the skills winners and scramble team winners. For the 8 tournament flights, winners were:

The Eagle Crest Golf Resort in Redmond, OR was once again the venue for this tournament, delivering great golfing weather with the added excitement one evening of a tremendous thunder and lightening show. The next morning it had cleared off for great golfing.

Monday afternoon, September 13th, golfers checked in at the registration table and were treated to a welcome reception on the patio of the restaurant/bar area. Tuesday we all gathered for a best-ball scramble, teams being made up of varying handicaps. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we played the three different courses at the resort: the Challenge Course, Ridge Course and Resort Course. Wednesday evening we were served a wonderful BBQ in an outdoor pavilion.

Friday evening was the awards banquet where we were served a delicious meal, awards were awarded for Men's and Women's Low Gross, and 3 places in each division for low net scores. Prizes were also awarded for the Closest to the Pin and Straightest Drive for Men and Women for each day of play. Jim Arnoldt won the drawing and had a chance at a $10,000 putt. It was close, but no cigar! Last year Cindy Schlaffman had a hole-in-one, and this year Ted Whitbeck had a hole-in-one! Who will it be next year??

Prizes were awarded as follows:

Low Gross Men - David George
1st Net, A Flight - Doug Belknap
2nd Net, A Flight - Tony Chadwick
3rd Net, A Flight - Phil Taylor

1st Net, B Flight - Tim Whiting
Tied for 2nd Net, B Flight - Jim Arnoldt & Bob Hungerford

1st Net, C Flight - Justin Burns
2nd Net, C Flight - Jim Jacobsen
3rd Net, C Flight - Ryan Ward

1st Net, Seniors - Al Walker
2nd Net, Seniors - Al Christensen
3rd Net, Seniors - Pat Wilcox

Low Gross Women - Dot Walker
1st Net, A Flight - Donna Schultz
Tied for 2nd Net, A Flight - Sue Wilcox & Arlene Smith

1st Net, B Flight - Michelle Ward
2nd Net, B Flight - Judy Lentz
Tied for 3rd Net, B Flight - Trish Kohan & Laura Beason

Click here: photos for scenes from this tournament.

Thank you very much, Laura and Dee, for the great job you have done on these tournaments. You have made it look easy, but we all know that there is so much more to putting on a tournament than what we see when we are there. Thanks, Laura, for finding this wonderful resort that we all enjoy so much.

This year we paid a memorial tribute to the golfing friends we lost this year: Pat Stone Spencer (1935 - 2010); Roger Tersteeg (1942 - 2010) and Ronald W. Nielsen (1947 - 2010).

Hope to see you all at the next tournament in Casa Grande, AZ March 15-18, 2011 with check-in and registration on Monday, 3/14.

Barb WhitingUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3736481368041588581.post-35552046756082075812010-10-10T15:21:00.011-08:002010-10-10T16:40:34.775-08:002009 Fall Memorial Tournament - Eagle Crest Golf Resort, Redmond, OR2009 was the second year for Co-Chairs Laura Beason and Dee Boster, and they continued the tournament at the Eagle Crest Golf Resort in Redmond, Oregon. Their hard work and long hours culminated in a good time, good food, good golf and good fellowship. Thanks, Steve and Cindy, for all you did!

A Welcome Reception Monday afternoon was added to the registration process and appetizers and libations were served as Juneau's golfers gathered at the Francisco Grande Resort.

Tuesday morning, golfers gathered in teams of four to play a best-ball scramble. This is always a fun time to get acquainted with other golfers and figure out your strategy to try to get the lowest score. The top 4 teams for the Scramble were:

#1 - Bob Winter, Jim Sturrock, Brie Jensen & Barb Whiting - 6 under par; #2 - Gary Droubay, Mike Gabel, Bill Elliot & Kris Burnett - 5 under par; #3 - Dale Schmitz, Randy Moore, Brian Parker & Jack Bodine - 4 under par; #4 - Tom Gadberry, Harvy Johnson, Pat O'Brien & Bell Moore - 4 under par.

A Mexican Dinner was served in the Banquet Room with prizes awarded, announcements made and discussions of the day's play.

Wednesday morning golfers put their competition hats on and headed out to their respective holes to start golfing in the 3-day tournament. In the afternoon, the putting contest took place where attendees could buy a chance to make a very long putt and come closest to the designated pin. The putting contest continued each afternoon throughout the tournament. An Italian dinner was held in the ballroom that evening with announcements and door prizes and everyone re-hashing the day's good and bad shots.

Thursday morning golfers set out on their second day of competition, still having fun, then continuing on to try again in the putting contest. Dinner was "on your own" that evening, so many had dinner in the hotel dining room or headed to town to find out what was new in the town of Casa Grande. (Yes, there is a GREAT new mall at the other end of town!)

Friday morning the golfers were getting more serious ... this was their last chance to either continue their good streak or hopefully to improve from the previous days of play. There was a drawing of the raffle tickets that had been sold, with the winner being the lucky one to make a 30 foot putt for $10,000. Brie Jensen, attending for the first time from Canada, and Harvy Johnson's father-in-law, was the lucky winner. Now he had all day to think about that putt! In the afternoon the putting contest continued, and then the finalists from each day were given the chance to putt for the big winnings. The top 6 putters were: 1st Place – Dan Rear;
2nd Place – Bob Hugerford; 3rd Place – Mike Tennison; 4th Place – Justin Burns; 5th Place – David George; 6th Place – Tom Koester. It was now Brie Jensen's turn for the $10,000 putt. Drum roll, please ... everyone's holding their breath ... Tim Alai from the Pro Shop is the witness ... Brie putts ... looking good ... looking good ... everyone's cheering ... oh no ... it stops just inches from the hole. Nice try, Brie. There's always next year!

Friday evening was the Awards Banquet with a great dinner and prizes awarded to the golfers. More raffle prizes were awarded, and golfers and friends conversed and talked about how well they were going to do at the next tournament!

Click here for the scores and click here for the scramble and skills scores.

During the days of play, Sue Ogden and Marcy Patten were taking photos so we would all have memories of the fun. Click here for photos. Thanks, Sue and Marcy, for the memories and also for the great photo show at the banquet!

Thanks to all who attended. The Juneau Golf Club looks forward to its next tournament in September in Redmond, Oregon.
